Abortion: A Solution To Global Warming
The British government's green adviser, Jonathon Porritt, issued a statement saying that families with more than two children were "irresponsible" and contributing to the plight of global warming by causing a burden on the planet. Therefore, world leaders should begin adopting policies tackling population growth through contraception and abortion. Porritt was quoted as saying "I am unapologetic about asking people to connect up their own responsibility for their total environmental footprint and how they decide to procreate and how many children they think are appropriate." I understand the point Porritt is making. It is a no-brainer that a healthy sustainable population is one which is in balance between birth rate and death rate. In other words, the number of total births per year matches the number of total deaths. As our medical technology improves, so does our species' life expectancy. An unhealthy population growth will therefore result because more people would be living than are dieing as well as using up more natural resources. I think this is what Porritt is getting at. However, to promote abortion as a way to bring about sustainability and lessen the effects of global warming is disgusting.
China is a perfect example of how a policy limiting the number of children per family can back fire. The number of daughters murdered have increased ever since China's government issued their family law. Because sons are valued more than daughters in the Chinese culture, fathers and mothers are killing their innocent children in order to try for a son. What will happen in Europe or America if a limited child policy was enacted? Do you really want them to follow suite? The horrific possibility alone should be enough to abandon it.
Furthermore, promoting abortion is a bad idea because it is now possible to determine the sex of a child while he/she is still in the womb. Establishing a policy like Porritt suggests would allow mothers to have an abortion simply based on the child being a girl, which frankly is just wrong.
