Tis' The Season To Count Our Blessings

Tis' the season to count our blessings even though many others can not...

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone and the Christmas Holidays are just 30 days away, many people may start counting their blessings for what they have in live. For example, I am blessed to have a roof over my head, plenty of food and clean water to satisfy me at any time, and most importantly I am blessed for my family and friends who never stop supporting me. But we should never stop thinking about those around the world and in our own backyards who find little if not nothing to be blessed about. Here is an example that has been bothering me for days:

Last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, I read a horrific article about a 19 year-old Saudi Arabian girl who was the victim of a gang rape. She has been sentenced to six months in jail and 200 lashes because of being found guilty to being with a man whom was not related to her at the time of the attack. Originally she was to only receive 90 lashes but because this case was covered through several media outlets the Saudi General Court increased the sentence on appeal. Despite international protests from all around the globe including the U.S. and European countries which cites such a sentence as punishing the victim, the Saudi courts are standing by the decision due to the fact that the case against her was "proven". Personally I feel the Saudi government is cowardly by failing to realize such a law is grossly inhumane, prejudicial against women, and simply out of touch with modern thought.

So the next time you are so quick to complain about your lot in life, remember this poor Saudi girl who is going to suffer jail time and 200 lashes just because she was hanging out with some guy right before being brutally gang raped, and then count your blessings that you are not her...
